There are so many subjective qualities that it is necessary to simplify by grouping them into three main groups.
The AIR-type group (aka "Vata") describes qualities that are like air; light, mobile, changing, cool, dry, raw, rough, fast & variable.
The EARTH-type group (aka "Kapha" includes qualities that are heavy, thick, dense, liquid, solid, turbid, cool, static, immobile, soft & oily.
The FIRE-type group ("Pitta") qualities are hot, sour, fleshy, pungent, liquid, spreading, sharp, salty & penetrating.
Everything has some of each quality group. Most things are dominated by one group with the other quality groups being secondary and tertiary.
A person is said to be an "AIR," "FIRE," or "EARTH" type when one group is dominant.
Each person is born with a specific ratio of these groups (e.g. 3 parts AIR/2 parts FIRE/1 part EARTH).
Over time, qualities come into our lives that can change these ratios. An excess of a quality beyond the genetic ratio is viewed as an imbalance & often leads to problems.
